    Road Flooding Safety Guide

    Turn Around, Don't Drown

Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock you down. 12 inches can sweep a small vehicle. Never drive through flooded roads.

    Barricades mean stop

If a road is barricaded or closed by officials, respect it — even if water looks shallow. Road may be damaged underneath.

    Alternate routes

Have a backup route planned before a storm. GPS apps may not account for fresh flood closures.

    Check 511 before you drive

FL511.com and the FL511 app show real-time road closures. Bookmark it before hurricane season.

    After the storm

Roads may be damaged, covered in debris, or have hidden underwater hazards even after water recedes. Drive slowly and cautiously.
