    What to Bring — Shelter Checklist

    Bring essentials

    Pack a go-bag: medications (7-day supply), ID, insurance documents, phone charger, cash, water, snacks, and extra clothing.

    Pets must be in carriers

    Most general shelters do not accept pets. Many counties operate separate pet-friendly shelters — call ahead.

    Special needs shelters

    Register with your county's special needs registry in advance if you use medical equipment or need evacuation assistance.

    Plan your route early

    Do not wait for a mandatory evacuation order. Leave as soon as voluntary evacuations are recommended for your zone.

    What to expect

    Shelters are basic — cots, restrooms, and limited privacy. Bring earplugs, eye masks, and activities for children.

    After the storm

    Do not return home until officials declare it safe. Watch for downed power lines, contaminated water, and weakened structures.

    Special Needs Registry

    Florida counties maintain special needs registries for residents who need transportation assistance, medical equipment, or other support during evacuations. Register before hurricane season.

    Pet-Friendly Shelters

    Florida law (F.S. 252.3561) requires each county to have at least one pet-friendly shelter. Pets must be in carriers. Contact your county emergency management office for the designated location.
